YOGA FOR TRAUMA TRAINING

Traumatic experiences and emotional or psychological distress leaves its grooves in the body. Often those memories that are erased from the mind are left engraved in the body and can resurface in the form of bodily reactions, emotions or even somatic pain.

Trauma Informed Yoga is an evidence based methodology yoga created by psychologists and psychiatrists to treat, as complementary therapy, trauma and its consequences.

In this course, you will learn what is trauma including it’s symptoms and the types that exist, how it affects the brain and nervous system, and how we can work through a body based practice to render conventional therapy more effective.

Additionally, understanding trauma opens a window for us to understand other forms of distress: Anxiety, depression, addictions, ADHD, or addictions and how through that knowledge and understanding of the mind and nervous system is distress we can create a place of safety and reconnection.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

We offer a 23-hour course that will help you:

– Gain an understanding of the different types of trauma and their effects on the body and mind.

– Learn the tools and techniques that make the practice of yoga, breathing and mindfulness take into account the trauma and respect its needs and problems.

– Understand how yoga can be a complementary therapy and learn to apply it.

– Learn to use the tools and techniques of empathy and compassion so that sharing “Informed Yoga in trauma” is a mutually beneficial exchange.

The course will be taught by María Macaya, founder and president of Fundación Radika. Maria, is trained in informe yoga with the Justice Resource Institute (Brookline, MA, US) and the center for Trauma and Recovery (Oakland, CA, US) has studied neuroscience with Kings College, London and Addictions and Recovery with Stanford University (San Francisco, CA, US). She is a yoga practitioner since twenty years, is an advanced 800 Jivamukti teacher and a mentor at Jivamukti trainings and in their JTAP program.

You will be put into small mentor groups. This mentor will accompany you through the program.
Mentors will also be teaching practice classes on specific themes.

Every week has 2 sessions:
A two hour theory session led by Maria Macaya
A one hour practice session with Q&A with one of the course mentors.

  • Types of Trauma

  • The Brain in Trauma
  • Neurophysiology of fear

Week 4:

  • The nervous system in Trauma and how to work with it
  • The window of tolerance and how to work with it

Week 5

  • Standard therapies and complementary therapies
  • Regulation techniques in crisis cases
  • Informed Yoga from the perspective of yoga philosophy

Week 6:

  • Introducing this methodology in different settings
  • Empathy, dignity and compassion
  • Groups and Extension Trainings
  • Questions and answers
  • Next steps

After week 6:

  • You have the opportunity to teach a full informed yoga class to your mentor and group with personalized feedback and to be at a minimum of two other test classes and feedback. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate diploma.

MARÍA MACAYA

María Macaya is the founder and president of Rādika. She moved to Barcelona with her family in 2014 after having lived in the United States, Central America and Europe for 30 years.

Maria founded Rādika in 2016 with the intention of giving mental and emotional health a voice and providing knowledge and tools for well-being.

Maria has brought Trauma Sensitive Yoga to Spain – an evidence-based type of yoga for people with trauma. Maria offers sessions and has trained more than 300 professionals in the methodology.

Her certifications include:

  • TCTSY 300 hours, Center for Trauma and Embodiment of Brookline, Massachusetts
  • Advanced Program, Center for Yoga and Trauma Recovery of San Francisco
  • Addiction and Recovery Certificate program with Stanford University
  • Neuroscience, Kings College and Nazareth Castellanos

And has completed programs specialized in trauma with Bessel van der Kolk, Dan Siegel, Stephen Porges, and Peter Levine and embodiment and social justice with the Embody Lab.

Maria is currently studying with Gabor Maté in his professional program to implement the Compassionate Inquiry therapeutic process.

Maria is a Jivamukti 800 hour advanced yoga teacher and trains teachers at this school.

She holds a BA in Art History and International Relations from Tufts University, an MA in Art Criticism from Columbia University, and is Certified in Creative Writing by Stanford University.
